I almost prefer the coupe though, it’s like an Italian VW 411 or something

The one my dad drove in college. Pictured here for sale after something they never could diagnose (but the mechanic could temporarily fix) caused the entire engine compartment to be covered in hot oil and smoke for the third time.

That doesn’t sound like a fun problem at all....too bad it had to be sold, but that’s a pretty fair reason

There's an employee at my grocery store with a green one. He gets a kick out of me parking the Abarth next to it (it makes my car look HUGE) and brags that he can take cloverleaf entrance ramps at 55mph. I can't do that.

They could never figure out what caused it. My dad thinks it was just throwing a tantrum.

Yeah, it seems like Italian cars like to do that

That’s the same thing that kept happening to my parents after they bought a Dodge Aspen with a 318 V8 back in the late 70s. The dealer never could permanently fix it and the oil managed to take out the alternator the last time it happened. That was my parents’ one and only Chrysler product.

sounds like a pcv valve sticking shut, or getting overpowered by blowby, letting the engine build up enough pressure until it finds the weakest seal/ gasket to let off at.........

Yay! I love the FIAT 124 Spider, but I want an 850 Spider even more because quirkiness/rear-engined! :P

Also, the 850 sedan is a happy car! :D

In the 70's I bought a 68 Fiat 850 Spider as my first car. It had been on the road for 3 years and the drivers floor pan was rusted out because the top was already bad. We riveted in a new panel and seam sealed it. Paint , undercoating and a new top made it roadworthy and I ran it for 3 yrs. My sister borrowed it and somehow ruined the cam. JC Whitney had a cam and gaskets for $38 plus shipping. Ran like a charm after that. Not fast, but the fun factor was enormous.
